Old Economy Out as New Economy Ushered In

A week after Lehman Brother's was tempted with an offer of tax breaks to expand operations by 500 employees in Jersey City, a textile distributor is ready to leave the city for Columbus Ohio. Barwil Industries may relocate to Columbus reports the Columbus Dispatch, after being offered an incentive of nearly $1 million and some beads and trinkets.

The two news stories represent a fundamental job shift in Jersey City. While the city is encouraging high paying "knowledge jobs" like financial services, traditional working class jobs are disappearing.

City and Honeywell Enter Land Deal

The city transfer 35 acres to Honeywell in a deal with the company to clean up 100 acres of chromium tainted property and eventually resell the parcels for redevelopment on the West Side reports the Journal. Jersey City and Honeywell will share in the profits from the sale of the land, with Honeywell paying the city an advance against future profits. THat $15 million dollars has already been spent by the Healy administration plugging holes in this years budget. Healy faces a crowded field in next year's mayoral election.

Joker Action Figure Arriving Today in Jeresy City

Batman's Joker action figures went on sale and quickly sold out in New York; the figures, modeled on deceased actor Heath Ledger's likeness are being favored by collectors. While stocks in Time's Square may havesold out, Gothamist notes Jersey City should be expecting a shipment today. Toys R Us in Jersey City city is located on route 440.

AMB Property Acquires Land

AMB Property plans to develop an 878,000 square foot distribution center on 50 acres in Jersey City. AMB plans to seek LEED certification for the project.

Street Too Narrow for Parked Cars

Oxford Street is officially too narrow for parked cars according to the State DOT, reports the Journal. Part of the problem residents face results from the city having granted curb cuts to new construction, and fewer garages than apartments.
